Just in this past week I have variously been asked to do two separate speaking engagements (each over 200 miles from where I live), undertake an entire re-branding assignment, review a business plan, find finance for a start-up company and give mentoring advice.

All for free.  

With the vague promise of a benefit for me somewhere in the distant future…

My great friend and business coach Katharine Dever puts it beautifully:

‘Why should I shrink myself to meet your low expectations?’

As an ex-Dragon with a world of contacts, I’m someone who has a real capacity to leverage ‘freebies’.  Yet I actually make a point of paying for the goods and services I need.

It’s good old fashioned courtesy which shows real respect for the value that other people offer.

That’s why I chuckled just now when I read one of my favourite marketing gurus Seth Godin’s blogpost this week about Philanthropists and Bandits - it’s well worth a read!

And if you fall into the ‘Bandit’ camp maybe you’ll realise now why you never seem to have the resources to pay anyone.  Because when you don’t value others it’s a sign you don’t value you.

The point of this short and sweet post is when you have an unusual and highly identifiable name it’s best not to piss off people who can get your nasty messages straight to the top of Google.

This week found us at the launch of Glastonbury Global Radio where Barefoot Doctor and I have a new show ‘Barefoot and The Dragon’ playing out across the airwaves as from next Monday.

We’ve just recorded our first episode – a metaphysical take on global events with a bit of fun thrown in…

It’s ultra-exciting as Glastonbury Radio has just been taken over by a Hollywood syndicate of investors with the plan to create a multi-media channel broadcasting metaphysical themes worldwide – with a whole host of A-list celebrities joining the station.

I’m delighted to announce the latest experience I am involved in – creating ‘The Big Om’ at Wembley Arena on 12.12.12.

This mass sound healing event is being lead by Barefoot Doctor and you can get involved with the crowdfunding initiative for which you’ll receive a generous allocation of priority front of arena tickets.

Last week I went down to Broadhempston in Devon to see my good friend the Inner Wisdom Expert Srimati and her lovely husband Pat.

Pat (aka @HolyCornishman on Twitter) is a very interesting, humurous and spiritual guy (here’s a clip below) and (horror of horrors to all the green tree drinking Mind Body Spirit people) does like the occasional glass of wine or three… Plus he is a Dragon in the Chinese scheme of things, all of which means to me he’s always great fun to be with.

After an evening of great conversation and laughter, helped along by several bottles of Pinot Grigio, Srimati, Pat and I decided to venture out into the (deserted) village – and for some reason ended up jiving to ‘Dancing Queen’ outside the local pub ‘The Monk’s Retreat’. To cut a long story short they refused to serve us and we were ejected by the landlord, followed up by a letter apparently sent the next day to say we were officially ‘banned’ and if we turned up again the police would be called!

Not very spiritual behaviour???

The answer lies in a brilliant book by Doreen Virtue called ‘Realms of the Earth Angels’ and I’ve just re-read my copy.
Essentially about people who are different and who don’t conform/fit in with the rest of society.

One type is the incarnate elementals – pure elemental energy, the rule breakers, with fiery tempers and addictive personalities, who love women & sex, who are also the life and soul of the party with a mischievous disruptive sense of humour. Then there are the wise ones – old souls with pure magic energy. And a description of a combination of the two (the Leprechauns) – which exactly fits Pat.

According to the book, the Leprechauns are magical time-travelling shape shifters possessing ancient wisdom and healing powers, vacillating between being serious teachers & rowdy jokesters…. wonderfully entertaining teachers & storytellers. ‘As long as you can weather their vacillating moods and flirtations, Leprechauns make wonderful friends and romantic partners. You’ll never be bored by a member of this realm.’

All this made me realise there is another Leprechaun in my life – Barefoot Doctor aka Stephen Russell – who I am now managing. He’s also legendary for his outspoken behaviour and has been banished from several kingdoms as a result of it! Much pompous judgement and speculation rumbles on – particularly amongst the ‘love and light’ people – as to whether his is ‘spiritual behaviour’.

Both Pat and Stephen are lights of my life.

The point of this post is that when we start to understand one another’s amazing energy and enjoy the essence and the magic of it – instead of judging others according our set of ‘rules’ as to what is acceptable and particularly what is ‘spiritual’ – that’s when we can all truly relax and have some fun!

(It is of course easier to say all this when you know you are a much misunderstood elemental yourself – just a different sort – but that’s a whole other blogpost :-)

To be honest I am getting a bit fed up of the ‘Anti-Capitalism’ protests.

Mainly because no one who is interviewed can actually say what they are ‘Pro’ instead. Which reduces them to a group of whingeing troublemakers trying to feel important sitting in tents while doing nothing… Much complaining but no solutions.

There’s a lot to be said for Capitalism. It is what allows me to write this blog to you, communicate on my iPhone, buy cornflakes for £1.50 a packet, travel and generally function.

Or buy a £89 dome tent from Milletts in which to protest in.

Look at countries which don’t have the same organisation of capital – for example Africa. Millions starve.

The problem is not Capitalism. The problem is the greed and abuse of power that kicks in where money is involved. It is where the needs of self (or the organisation/group) are put above the needs of others.

In blocking the church and cluttering the streets so businesses cannot function I am afraid the St Paul’s protesters are just another face of that same selfish ‘me-first’ coin.

The real power lies with the consumer – so the answer is simple.

Don’t place your money with banks who are corrupt. Don’t buy goods and services from companies which are unethical.

Spend your days creating value through serving others. Support local traders. Collaborate. Switch to natural sources of power. Grow your own vegetables. Make do and mend. Love others for what is in their soul, not how they look, or what clothes they are wearing. Be grateful for all the abundance in your life.

Live in harmony.

But meantime don’t destroy the system that serves so many so well and allows us all to function.
